Something Fresh

Torrentia.

with 28 comments

So the last few weeks, I’ve completely ignored the blog. As I lie sleepy-headed and exhausted after one hell of a first exam, I’ll try to bring it back to life.

Who designs college classrooms? Desks, to be specific? Has anyone ever bothered to think of the heinous discomfort that tall people go through while sitting on one of those ingenious creations? One leg bent crooked one way, the other doing a somersault three feet away, giving the next person inadvertent kicks in the shin. Sometimes the next person gets scandalized, suspecting an apparent attempt at playing footsie. Of course, the simpler alternative is to mercilessly break the shelves under the desks. But breaking one a week is simply over-doing it a bit, no?

Is there a bigger thrill than whizzing by in the car in torrential rain at twilight, half-drenched and jaunty? I like NH 4, at least around the area when it winds through the greenish-yellow sun-bathed hillocks in the midst of the city. When you can see the entire city: young and old, skyscrapers (or our version of them) and the jhopadpattis, the GM showrooms and the Neerawallas, one contrast after another. Annoyed pedestrians who get sprayed from the brimming ‘streams’ on the roads. Nonchalant bikers who think they’re in a powerboat race. And then, just as fate would have it, ‘November Rain’ plays. Did I really just get out of an exam?

There is still nothing that beats the official onset of the monsoon. When it starts raining, look around. Five of every ten people you see are taking in the smell of the ‘oli maati’. Count. Build a probabilistic model if you like. Everyone just shuts up about their troubles, makes ‘gavati chaha’ and ‘bhaji’ and eats. I’m no psychic, but I swear I thought the monsoons would begin today. Of course, in hindsight, no one would believe me, and I’d have to rue the fact that I didn’t announce my premonition to anyone earlier.

  1. Still aren’t done exams????

I guess cus there is a lot more short people than tall people, so they don’t give much of a thought. You should question some of the buses, and same applies for flights (seats section) as well.

True. I’m one of those five people that likes the smell of ‘maati’ and also the smell of petrol. Doesn’t everyone eat ‘pakodas’ as well during monsoon season? I hope I haven’t forgotten that given my dislike for pakodas.

lol! Maybe you predicted the monsoons for another country without realizing it!

  2. Lol…i get what u mean…wid d benches…even though i miss not being in the 6 ft club its still takes a lot to fit into a standard size bench…At least the ones in FC were half decent…though v didnt really need to spend too much time there…

Oh n ‘oli maati’s right up there…Just after freshly ground coffee beans n yeah, petrol!!

  3. Never mind. I had the impression it wasn’t raining there, but judging by twitter it did rain in some parts. You’re the soothsayer!

  4. @ Mia:
    Aren’t done? They just began!

Oh and the flight seats ARE like bus seats. Maybe worse, cuz in the Volvo buses, I can at least stretch my legs under the front seat. So I always pick the emergency exit seat on flights :D

‘Pakodas’? You mean ‘bhaji’, right? HOW come you don’t like them? :O

“It did rain in some parts?” “IT DID RAIN IN SOME PARTS?”!!! It rained not cats and dogs, but rhinos and hippos. And hail. About half of Pune’s trees fell, 90% of the roads were clogged with water and my area had a power outage that lasted something like 22 hours! O M G!

Another country? It rained in Canada too?

    @ Aditya:
How agonizingly short of the six feet club are you (*glee*)?
And petrol: YUM! :D I like the smell of paint too! Coffee beans, not so much.

  5. Good luck! When do they end then?

I HATE Pakodas! Every year while I sat in the train during the Monsoon Season everyone around would want ‘Pakodas’ and then there is this guy that always comes around with them. When everyone likes something = me disliking it. That’s just the way I am.

That bad? Yikes. So, when do you predict the rain will stop? :D Everyone on twitter is writing “rain” with a smiley face. I just read the few celebrity tweets that were in Mumbai, so I thought it rained in Mumbai, Pune and a few other places?

Yep. Looks like rain is universal this year in June.

  6. Thanks a lot! Worst part is I don’t know the date of my last exam yet. I hope to be done by the end of next week.

Pakodas (I hate calling them that!) = awesome!

“When everyone likes something = me disliking it.” True, WHOever in the world likes ‘bhendi’?!

  7. @Fez: (extremely PROUD to say this :P): Me. And WHY would I want anyone to even like ‘bhendi’? I prefer being the only person! So that if ever in the future there is limited supply of ‘bhendi’, then *I* will be the only one that gets to eat it!
To be honest ‘bhendi’ is my second choice, and I’m not telling you my favorite dish, else you will just find another reason to OPPOSE whatever I am saying!

  10. I bet it’s not as embarrassing as mine. Probably in a different sense though! Lol, Dollar was allergic to paint?! I find it funny that a dog is allergic to something like paint! You, not so surprising :D

  14. @Fez: Pakodas (I hate calling them that!) = awesome!

“When everyone likes something = me disliking it.” True, WHOever in the world likes ‘bhendi’?! <—– This is called picking on 'bhendi' and the best part is this sentence follows the Pakodas sentence! :D

@piscianemperor: You should be my partner. See we agree on Brazil and even 'bhendi'! :-)

  15. @ piscianemperor:
Haha, the only reason we tried NOT to get the emergency exit was cuz you wanted to look out of the window all the way back and go “wheeee” :D

Joy doesn’t like rains?! How ‘unJoyous’ is that!

    @ Mia:
Haha, so I picked on the vegetable, I still did not get defensive!

    Fez

    June 6, 2010 at 9:35 pm

  16. I think he meant it in the sense that everyone likes rains considering there were so many likes and dislikes.
So you were picking on the vegetable eh? :D Hmmm.

Top six rules on how to stop picking on a vegetable or rather someone.
    1) Think. Think. Think. Has the person ever picked on me?
    2) More thinking. *scratching forehead* Has the person ever picked on me?
    3) A lot of thinking *more and more scratching forehead* Has the person ever picked on me?
    4) Self reflection: Am I okay with someone picking on me? *looking up at the ceiling trying to figure out the answer*
    5) More thinking on Step 4.
    6) Am I seriously okay with someone picking on me? Sometimes okay? But sometimes totally NOT okay?

    Verdict:
All yes = Yipiiiii! :P YES, I can totally pick on that person!
Partial yes, and no = Booooooo! I can totally NOT pick on that person, because some people have no humor! I find it funny when I pick on them, but they don’t! Drat! :D
All no = I can totally NOT pick on that person like ever! No matter what happens! :-) :D (*hint* *hint*)

  17. @Fez
Yeah, and even this time, I have the center row :(

    @Mia
    I’m lost somewhere in 3) and 4) :D.
Well Brazil and bhendi are the only things we agreed about till now :P

  18. @ Mia:
Haha, WHOA! That’s SOME procedure to follow. Could I not just mock you? :D :D

    @ piscianemperor:
Center row? Dude, that is the WORST! I remember the time when planes used to have just one central TV way in the fornt (like buses do!). Yeah, antique. That’s the only time I was okay with sitting in the center.

  26. @somethinfresh..the funny thing about monsoons is how it spells different things for different people…a couple of days back the rain and torrential storm brought a tree crashing down in my neighbourhood…broke a couple of glass windows and i could see some old ladies carrying the freshly cut barks to light a ‘shegadi’ :) :) nice post !

  27. @ entangled:
Don’t call me somethinfresh! I’m a little embarrassed of the name of my blog! In my defense though, it was created YEARS ago, when I thought naming it so was a good idea :D

Lol, wet wood is one of the slowest burners, so good luck to them :). But yeah, it’s weird how people view it differently. Some people enjoy getting wet roaming around on their bikes, while others who have no home shiver uncontrollably and desperately search for refuge under a tree or something.

On another note, you haven’t posted in a while. Where are you?!
